Cavitation in Hydraulic Systems & Prevention Rules

Understanding cavitation knock, metal erosion, pump noise, and critical suction line design rules.

What is cavitation?

When suction pressure drops below fluid vapor pressure, micro gas bubbles form and collapse violently in high-pressure zones, eroding metal surfaces.

Cavitation symptoms

A distinct gravel-like noise inside the pump, flow instability, pressure fluctuations, and foaming oil are classic cavitation indicators.

Suction line errors

Undersized suction pipe, long runs, clogged inlet strainers, high fluid viscosity, or partially closed suction valves trigger severe cavitation.

Preventative measures

Enlarge suction pipe diameters, minimize elbows, keep suction filters clean, and keep pump inlet below oil level or within allowable suction head.
